I’m currently in the process of cleaning up a site that I’m working on, removing hundreds of pages that have zero pages views for the last couple years and redirecting them. However, when I look at the Redirection module, some of these pages have hits in the thousands. How is this possible and where are the hits coming from? I found a previous post about hit calculation but the answer there was less than helpful in explaining how these hits are counted. Is this a count from the creation of the page or only since the page was redirected?

There’s not much information needed really – a hit is when a redirect occurs. It is counted from when the redirect was created, or last reset. There’s not much else.

Ok….but how are you counting these hits? I find it hard to believe that Google would be incorrect in that a page would have zero pageviews for two years and then suddenly 2 days after I create the redirect, it has 700 hits. Is it the page that’s being redirected that the hits are counting for, or the page that it is being redirected to that the hits are counting for?

As I said, a hit is recorded when a redirect occurs.

The hits are for the page that is being redirected. The plugin has no interest in the target page.
