Home page issues

I have to admit I am not very proficient with this site. A while back I created some images on my home page (I think they are called widgets) and they are now outdated. I want to make changes to them but cannot for the life of me find where to make the change. I have searched endlessly. When I go to the appearance and widgets (where I think I am supposed to be) there is nothing there for me to edit or delete.
