High Performance order storage synchronisation stuck

We had 6000 orders out of synch but now it is stuck at 2000. We cannot get these last ones to synch so we can turn on the HPOS

Enable compatibility mode (Synchronize orders between High-performance order storage and WordPress posts storage).

It seems the sync is getting stuck partway through the remaining orders. Please try these steps:
1. Go to WooCommerce → Status → Scheduled Actions, filter for pending and look for HPOS sync hooks like wc_hpos_background_sync_order. Try running a few manually to see if they complete.
2. Since WP-Cron appears disabled, background sync won’t run automatically. Re-enable WP-Cron temporarily or set up a real server cron job to call wp-cron.php every few minutes.
3. Check for any failed actions and view their logs — a specific order may be blocking the queue.
4. Update WordPress to 6.8.3, as it includes fixes that improve HPOS sync reliability.
5. After that, retry the sync.
If it’s still stuck, please share:
- Any failed action log message from Scheduled Actions.
- The number of pending actions (you can run:
  SELECT COUNT(*) FROM wp_actionscheduler_actions WHERE status='pending'; )

Thanks for the quick reply.

I checked WooCommerce → Status → Scheduled Actions and I don’t see any wc_hpos_background_sync_order hooks pending.

WP-Cron is disabled because I’m hosted on WP Engine, which handles cron jobs through their Alternate Cron. Is that compatible ?

I’ve also checked the failed actions and none seem related to HPOS. The only failures I see are:
- action_scheduler/migration_hook (no callbacks registered)
- wc-admin_import_orders (no callbacks registered)
I’ve updated WordPress and WooCommerce to the latest versions as well, but the sync is still stuck around 2 000 orders and not moving.

I ran the SQL command you suggested and got count(*) = 61.

Given this, what’s the recommended next step ?

Thanks for the update — here’s a simple plan to get the last orders syncing:
1) Rebuild the HPOS sync queue
- Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced → Features.
- Turn off “Compatibility mode (synchronize orders…)” → Save.
- Turn it on again → Save.
2) Clear caches
- WooCommerce → Status → Tools: run Clear WooCommerce transients, Expired transients, Clear WooCommerce.com cache.
3) Check Scheduled Actions
- WooCommerce → Status → Scheduled Actions.
- Search the Hook column for hpos (e.g., wc_hpos_background_sync_order).
- If you see any, click Run on a few to confirm they complete.
4) Remove a common conflict
- Deactivate the legacy “WooCommerce Analytics” plugin (analytics is built into WooCommerce now).
- Repeat steps 1–3.
5) Quick DB check (optional)
Run these to see which orders are still missing (adjust wp_ if your DB prefix differs):

Open one of those order IDs in the admin (view only), then re-toggle compatibility mode again.

6) Ensure cron is firing
- WP Engine’s Alternate Cron is fine, but it runs on traffic. While the queue is pending, visit the site a few times (incognito), or temporarily set DISABLE_WP_CRON to false and test again.
If it’s still stuck:
- Share a fresh System Status Report via Pastebin/Gist (with compatibility mode ON).
- In Scheduled Actions → Failed, copy any recent errors (Pastebin link).
- If you ran the SQL, share the missing count and a few order IDs returned.
We’ll use that to pinpoint the blocker and get you over the line.

Thank you for the detailed steps.

I’ve gone through everything :
1. Rebuilt the HPOS sync queue (compatibility mode OFF → Save → ON → Save).
2. Cleared caches (Woo transients, expired transients, WooCommerce.com cache).
3. Deactivated the legacy “WooCommerce Analytics” plugin.
4. Cron : set DISABLE_WP_CRON to false to test default wp-cron.
I still don’t see any HPOS hooks (wc_hpos_background_sync_order, etc.) in Scheduled Actions (pending/failed/completed). Here is a fresh System Status Report : https://pastebin.com/s9au3yVQ ass well as my most recent failed actions (12): https://pastebin.com/tegf8bR8

DB checks
- Legacy orders not migrated to HPOS: 2159
- Sample order IDs still not migrated : 21468, 21470, 21472
After reviewing these orders, I think I may have just figured out why those ~2000 orders are stuck.
On September 15th, I actually ran a bulk SQL query directly in phpMyAdmin to update the order status from “Ready for shipping” (slug = wc-partially-shipped) to “Shipped” (slug = wc-completed) for a large batch of orders (most likely the same ~2000 currently not migrated). At that time, HPOS wasn’t active.

UPDATE wp_posts
SET post_status = ‘wc-completed’
WHERE post_type = ‘shop_order’
AND post_status = ‘wc-partially-shipped’;
Probably the SQL command i’ve ran

Since this was done directly in the database and not through WooCommerce hooks I now suspect HPOS never received any triggers to enqueue background sync actions for those orders…

Just wanted to share this context since it’s probably the root cause.

Thank you for the thorough update — the investigation you’ve done is excellent. Your hypothesis makes sense: updating those orders directly via SQL would have bypassed WooCommerce hooks, so no HPOS sync jobs would have been queued for that batch.

Can you confirm whether this insight let you unblock the sync? In other words:
- Has the “pending” count started to drop, or
- Are those ~2,159 legacy orders still unmigrated?

Thanks for getting back to me.

Since my first message, the “pending sync” count has actually increased slightly from 2,073 to 2,248. This seems to match the new orders placed on the site, which are also getting stuck in the queue, likely because the old ~2,159 legacy orders are still blocking the migration flow i guess.

Either way, those legacy orders are still unmigrated, and the sync isn’t progressing at all.

So yes I still need guidance on how to actually get those orders to migrate, or a way to force the HPOS sync to catch up quickly.

Can you advise the most efficient way to fix this ?

Hi there!

Thank you for the update. I checked the first screenshot you shared and noticed that the “Enable compatibility mode” option was unchecked.

To sync orders, please enable the “Enable compatibility mode” option by checking its checkbox and see if that resolves the issue.

Once this setting is enabled, background actions will be scheduled.
- The wc_schedule_pending_batch_process action checks whether there are orders that need to be backfilled.
- If there are, it schedules another action (wc_run_batch_process) to backfill these orders to post storage.
- You can either wait for these actions to run on their own (which shouldn’t take long), or you can go to WooCommerce > Status > Scheduled Actions, find the actions, and click the Run link under the action name (which appears when the mouse cursor hovers over the name).
- This action will backfill 25 orders at a time. If there are more orders to be synced, further actions will be scheduled once the previous actions are completed.

Thanks for your message, but as explained in my earlier replies, and as confirmed by @lovingbro , I already turned on compatibility mode right after my very first message in this thread.

It’s been enabled the entire time since then, and unfortunately it didn’t change anything.

Even with compatibility mode ON :
- No wc_hpos_background_sync_order hooks ever appear in Scheduled Actions,
- The pending sync count has actually increased from 2,073 to 2,248,
- Those 2,159 legacy orders remain unmigrated, and now new orders are also stuck.
So this is not a case of the setting being off the problem clearly runs deeper (as discussed, likely because of the old SQL update that probably bypassed hooks ?).

I still need real guidance on how to force those legacy orders to migrate or trigger HPOS sync for that batch.

4. Visit any admin page (like your WordPress Dashboard) — you should see a message like “Queued X orders for sync”.
5. To confirm, go to WooCommerce → Status → Scheduled Actions and look for wc_hpos_background_sync_order. These should show as pending.
Once confirmed, please deactivate the snippet — it only needs to run once.

Note: Before proceeding, it’s strongly recommended to back up your site manually and, if possible, enable maintenance mode while running the action for the first time. This ensures you can easily restore your site if anything unexpected happens.

Hi @mosesmedh ,

Yes i do have access to WP-CLI but i would prefer keep it simple so after using the snippet suggested to enqueue jobs, I now see many wc_hpos_background_sync_order entries in Scheduled Actions but they all fail immediately with the following message :

“Scheduled action for wc_hpos_background_sync_order will not be executed as no callbacks are registered.”

Examples (from Failed list): order IDs 25930, 25975, 25978, 25979, 25983, 25984, 21474, 21488, 21515, 21518 … all the same error.

Thanks in advance, I’m ready to run whichever CLI if needed. What do you recommend to force the backfill safely and get these ~2,159 orders migrated ?

Thanks for the update! The error you’re seeing suggests that while the scheduled actions are being created, WooCommerce isn’t detecting the callback function required to process them. This usually occurs when the HPOS sync hasn’t been fully initialized.

Since you have access to WP-CLI, the best approach is to use the official WooCommerce CLI command to migrate your orders — it’s the safest and most reliable method.

Please run the following command first:

wp wc cot sync --batch-size=50
```
If that doesn’t work, try the alternative command below:
