• Good morning, I was having a major problem with my website. I kept getting “Error 503 Backend fetch failure” messages, preventing me from using the site. After reporting the problem to my hosting provider, I was told that the error was caused by Wordfense, which was generating a very high load on the database through numerous heavy SQL queries on the wfconfig table. After disabling Wordfense, the situation returned to normal. Any suggestions on the nature of this abnormal activity of Wordfence or about configuration of Wordfence in general? Thank you very much.

Hi @alnbusso, thank-you for contacting us.

Generally when we’ve seen issues with wfconfig, it can be down to an excessive number of rows. That isn’t particularly common though.

You could try optimizing the table in phpmyadmin (or however you usually administer your database) to see if it removes them from the slow query log. This is good to keep an eye on to ensure everything continues to run smoothly and may improve efficiency if maintenance hasn’t been performed for a while.

If not, it could be worth seeing a copy of your PHP error log and diagnostic report to us. You can send that to wftest @ wordfence . com. The link to do so is at the top of the Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

NOTE: It should look as follows – Screenshot of Tools > Diagnostic > Send by Email

If your host can share one or two example queries that were problematic, it would also help identify whether this was normal scan/config activity or something unusual.

    Many thanks,
    Peter.

    Hi @alnbusso,

I can’t find a diagnostic in our inbox related to your username. Do you still require assistance with this?

    Peter.
