Hide sidebar without editing theme

Hello, I understand that to hide the sidebar on a single job listing, I should create a single-job_listing.php file in my theme and copy the contents of the single.php file, removing the sidebar content. The issue with this, however, is that when there is a theme update, all of this gets undone. How can I do this so that it is permanent? Some kind of custom plugin?
