Hide Registration Page

I’m trying to do something which on the face of it sounds straight forward but I can’t quite get there so hopefully there is a solution.

Here goes:
1. I want to hide the registration page. I’ve achieved this in as far as I’ve figured out that under Settings > Appearance there is an option to remove secondary button – Perfect! 🙂

2. I still want to be able to send a link to prospective members to register on the registration page but as I said in point 1 – I don’t want the registration page visible to everyone.

I can achieve this to some extent by making my login page (without registration button) the first static page on my wordpress site and then making the website content accessible to everyone and hiding all the menus unless somwonw is logged in, but this kind of defeats the object of having a login/user account at all.

I have an itch that I cannot quite scratch and would really appreciate some help.
