    Hi there! I absolutely love this theme, but I have two different questions

    1) How can I make a (preferably right side) side bar for widgets? As it stands right now, they all go on the centre and push my content down, and I’d like to have them on a separate, right side section. Is this possible?

    2) How can I make my uploaded header file larger? I’d like it to be the same size as the default ‘marla’ text, but it is much smaller than that when I upload, and I’m unsure how to change this.

    My website is http://www.DiaryofaFormerlyFatGirl.com if it helps. Thanks very, very much!!

  • Hi,

    Not sure if I can provide immediate assistance on question one as that appears more of a theme customization with moving php elements around.

    Question 2 though, you can fix pretty quick. “Marla” is actually an image that is 450×177 pixels. So instead of your tagline, just make an image that is that tall and wide with your tagline.

    Or you can edit your span class here on style.css line 977
    from:
    #header .chico {
    display: block;
    font-size: 0.5em;
    }
    to
    #header .chico {
    display: block;
    font-size: 1em;
    line-height: 2em;
    }
    and that should be pretty close to it.

    I would use a child theme if you are going to edit the css because it will be all lost if you update.

    Here’s info on that:
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes

    hope that helps some,

    Thank you so, so much! Re: question one, in another forum post I thought I saw the theme’s creator refer to a sidebar, so I’m unsure if I’m just being stupid or blind or if I’m just confused.

    Also, now that I have someone that knows what they’re doing ‘on the line’– how involved would it be to create a drop-down menu under one of the header categories?

    When you are editing a page> on the right side there is an area called page attributes. In there it has an area called (parent) select which page you would like that particular page to be under. In the page attributes section, you can also select your template and also what order in the navigation that will appear.

    Hope that helps.

    ah, thank you thank you! Finally, I’m just getting around to taking your advice on uploading a newly sized image for the header, but I’m under ‘Marla Theme’, and then ‘Header Image’, then ‘Header Image’ again, but for some reason, it isn’t showing me an option for uploading a new file. Any idea why?

    whoops, nevermind! I think I solved this one on my own : )

    now the only mystery that remains is that of the sidebar!

    I’m not seeing an easy fix that one at the moment. we would have to restructure the whole page it appears :/

    Hi,

    @diaryofaformerlyfatgirl thanks for using Marla
    @josiah thanks for your help

    1.- About the sidebars, there are 3 sidebars, one for the homepage and 2 for single posts, 1 right after the title and 1 at the end of the post. The layout is one single column at both sides of the single posts when you start to scroll down appears the date and tags/categories and on the right side the sharing buttons.

    2.- About the header you can use a img background like you´re using right now or display the your site name in text or a logo no wider than 530px, I suggest not too tall. You are using now a transparent img for logo.

    3.- You don´t have to use a child theme if you want to add some custom CSS, there´s a box for that.

    4.- Marla supports dropdown menus, under Appereance > Menu you can create your own, just drag the items under its parent.

    I hope I explain myself right, english is not my first language.

    I´m working in the next update so if you want to make any suggestions I´ll try to include them.

    Thanks again to both

    Great theme and good English!

    I’m not sure on the sidebar what all you are asking, but I would reccommmend a two column layout with an option of a right sidebar and a left sidebar.

    I second Josiah’s comments and suggestions! And it is a great theme, and you don’t need to apologize for your english– it’s great!

    Thank you for all of your help and advice. I’m now trying to figure out how to associate all of my posts with a given category (‘breakfast’, for example) with my page ‘breakfast’. So, if I write a post and put it in the ‘breakfast’ category, it automatically goes on my ‘breakfast’ page… I had done this before with my other theme, but for whatever reason, can’t figure it out now! Any ideas? Thanks!

    Thanks 😉

    I noted the suggestion for the 2 columns and I will include it on the next update, probably next week.

    About a category page is really easy, you just have to make an item menu with the URL of the category “breakfast”. This would be an example for the category “WordPress” http://marla.ceslava.com/en/category/wordpress/

    Best regards

    I’m still sort of confused…. I have a lot of these pages I’d like to do this with– for example, I want everything I put in the ‘recipe’ category to come up when you click the ‘recipe’ page, etc etc. Sort of like the main page, but only with posts tagged with the ‘recipe’ category… does that make any sense?

    diaryofaformerlyfatgirl

    (@diaryofaformerlyfatgirl)

    ok, I’ve sort of figured it out… I think.

    My category pages DO exist… recipes, for example, are http://www.diaryofaformerlyfatgirl.com/category/recipes/
    that is great, exactly what I want. BUT, it isn’t what is in my main header bar. When you click on ‘recipes’ in my main header bar, it brings you to http://www.diaryofaformerlyfatgirl.com/recipes/ which is totally blank. How can I make the header bar bring the user to the category page?
    Thanks!

    Category menu items are not pages -you need to create a custom menu and then add category items to it. See:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Menu_User_Guide

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Appearance_Menus_Screen#Categories

    diaryofaformerlyfatgirl

    (@diaryofaformerlyfatgirl)

    Right… but basically, if you go to my website: DiaryOfaFormerlyFatGirl.com you see the main header bar across the top– with categories like ‘recipes’, ‘work it out!’, etc.
    When you click on ‘recipes’ on that bar, it takes you to diaryofaformerlyfatgirl.com/recipes , but i want it to take you to diaryofaformerlyfatgirl.com/category/recipes …. how can I do this? Thanks!!

    Looks like you have those set up as Static Pages – you need to delete those pages from the custom menu and add category items – which are pulled from Posts.
