I need some guidance on image compression to speed up access to my website. I’m not sure if I need to shrink my images and re-upload them, and I’m prewtty confused about compression plugins – there seem to be so many around. Is there an independent guide to compression plugins?

  • I compress locally using the free Caesium Image Compressor program (not affiliated), and then upload to the site. I’m sure there are others. There are some plugin options too, but I have no experience with them. You’ll be surpised how small you can shrink the file size wihout any noticeable loss in quality.

The smush-it WordPress plugin will compress all existing images on your site. The free version only compresses around 50 images at a time so you have to keep restarting it until you get through all your existing images.

After that, smush it will compress all images you upload. This will slow down your upload process a bit, but you don’t need to pre-compress them.

If you want to do your compressions on your computer before you upload them, imageoptim is a good choice: https://imageoptim.com
