From your Dashboard, if you go to “Settings” and click on “Reading”. At the bottom of that page you can see a setting called “Encoding for pages and feeds”. Mine was set at “UTF-8”. Not so swift at 1 o’clock in the morning, I looked at it and my mind was thinking of the time zone. Duh?? I know rather stupid of me!! My time zone is “GMT -7”. I said to myself the time zone is set wrong, so.. I quickly changed it to “-7”. No sooner had I done that when I realized that it wasn’t “GMT” and I had changed something that I knew nothing about. Too late, It wouldn’t allow me to change it back. I tried a number of times with no luck at all. I then figured I should log off the server, and then log back on and try it again. Wrong!! Whatever I had done had locked me off the server.

So this morning I phoned tech. help at the server, told them what I had done, and asked if they could reset it for me. They said that it would be back up in 10 to 15 minutes and that they would send me a new password by email. I got the new password and logged back in, but the “UTF-7” setting is still there, and I am unable to reset it to “UTF-8”, that’s where it was. Now as a result of the change, my d
Dashboard will not load properly. Can anyone help me to get it back to where it should be??

  • Hummm…that change shouldn’t lock you out of your site. But, you can change it in the database. I don’t have a video to show that exact change, but if you view the following video, you do the exact same thing to change this setting, but instead of changing the url’s, you change the blog_charset option in that table. When you edit it, you change it to UTF-8

Are you sure you didn’t also change the url values in your Settings/General area as well? That would explain being locked out…may want to check the url’s I discuss in that video while you are there.

No, I didn’t change anything on the general page. All I was doing at the time was changing the rss feed from sumerized to full feed. After making that change is when I made the stupid mistake and got locked out from doing anything.

I will watch the video, and then try to make the change. I will post the resuls here afterwards, thanks.

I watched your video figaro, and I am just a newbie, I don’t have the knowledge at this time to perform that task. I am useing WP 2.7 and I don’t know anything about a Cpanel. So far I havn’t been able to figure it out. I am having some real, but minor problems with my blog due to that one change. things are really messed up from my point of view.
