I should add that it tells me to create two files..sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz. In the plugin folder these files are already showing, does the plugin automatically create them? If so do I just go ahead and activate?
You don’t need to create it manually and then upload it to server. No, it makes it for you. Did you read step 4 in instillation guide?
Open the plugin configuration page, which is located under Options -> XML-Sitemap and build the sitemap the first time

Yes I read that, but due to the wording of the instructions I am still rather confused. Why does step one tell me to upload the full directory into your wp-content/plugins directory?
Also, “Open the plugin configuration page, which is located under Options -> XML-Sitemap and build the sitemap the first time”…do I do this from my WP dashboard in the plugin secttion? All I see is settings, not options.
I appreciate the help, but I am still rather confused. In the plugin, it says that it has built my sitemap and has sent the info to Google and Yahoo but Google still says I have no sitemap.
The uploading step is for manual installation and if you installed the plugin successfully using automatic installation, ignore this step and start using the plugin by going to settings >> XML-Sitemap . Thanks…I did the automatic plugin installation and followed those instructions. Do you have an estimate until how long it might take for Google to recognize my site map?
Also, originally I did the automatic installation through wordpress plugins on my site, but also manually uploaded the said folder to my server as told in step one. Should I delete that plugin folder off my ftp server or should I just leave it?
Sorry for all the questions, but I very much appreciate your help so far.
No, you don’t need to delete the plugin and install it again, Just do nothing as you installed it successfully.
It depends on Google, but you can speed up this process by submitting your website in Google webmaster tools. It helps you a lot and gives you many information and statistics about your website.
Hi guys, I hope this discussion group is still open.
My problem is rather similar except that I have installed and activated the Google XML Sitemap plugin but nothing has happened and worse, I can’t seem to find it anywhere on my admin site.
I deactivated and installed it again, still no trace of it.
I am using the latest version of WordPress. Any idea what might be the problem?
Thank you.
