Good Day,

As you already know, AVIF is a NextGen image format that is quickly gaining popularity amongst developers and is now supported by most browsers. Google Chrome, for example, supports the AVIF format and currently holds 65% of the global market share. The AVIF format is also supported by most CDNs.

The advantages of using the AVIF format are numerous and most trump the WebP format.

Noteworthy: The above feature request was presented to SiteGround over 10 months ago, but nothing has been said or done about it since then.

Based on the above, what is SiteGround’s plan to offer AVIF image support via SGO?

It shouldn’t be too difficult to implement since the code and tools to make it happen are already available to developers.

As mentioned in the quoted forum thread, we are following the trends closely and once we decide, we will implement the compression into the SiteGround Optimizer plugin. I have also informed our developers for your request so they can be aware of the increased interest in the AVIF file format.

Thank you. Hopefully, your developers will read this post and take action.

AVIF is now supported by Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Mozilla, and Netflix. More companies plan to join this year.

I plan to closely monitor this topic.

Final Tip:

Not promoting, but this five-star plugin already offers AVIF conversion.

There’s enough support from the community, Fortune 100 companies, developers, and major browsers to justify adding the AVIF conversion feature to you plugin 🙂

Our developers looked into the request. Due to its current adoption rate, we won’t be adding the AVIF format to SG-Optimiser for now.

We will continue to monitor it and consider adding it once its adoption increases.

Thank you for the follow up.

With all due respect, your developers need to revisit their analysis.

The current adoption rate (by total number of browsers that support AVIF and market share) is around 96%.

I’ll let you guys do the math.
