When you use FTP, do you upload a zip? You should upload the unzipped version.

No, uploaded the unzipped version via FTP, uploaded the zip version via WordPress interface.
some hosting servers hide files from ftp clients….try to use the following option “Force show hidden files”, that option is present in Filezilla not sure if it is also present in the Fireftp plugin.

Reuben thanks for your reply, there is a ‘show hidden file’ facility in Fireftp, I have it set by default and it’s not showing the Themes/Directories referred to above.
As an experiment I downloaded Filezilla (it’s quick!) and used the ‘force show hidden files,’ command again no sign of the two Themes/Directories, and they are there for I can see them from within WordPress.
Anyone?

_notes Stylesheet is missing.
That doesn’t sound too good.
Make sure you upload the complete theme and make sure you don’t use “nested folders” (as in wp-content/themes/themename/themename/themefiles).

tell me about it
I’ve ran a check for nested templates and there is definitely none there. The only directory showing anyway is WP default Theme ‘Twentyten’ and here is it’s path /public_html/wp-content/themes/twentyten
As I’ve said the other Themes, one I downloaded from WP interface and the other one that I had on my computer I uploaded in zip format and if I activate them they seem to be working as you’d expect
Can’t figure out why I’m getting that _notes Stylesheet is missing and why wordpress won’t talk to either of my ftp programs
What themes are you using?

The Default twentyten, blue taste, codium extend, and thesis themes.
Twentyten is the only theme that appears both in WP and my ftp program.
Blue Taste I downloaded via WP downloads, it does not appear in ftp program
Thesis I uploaded a zip version via WordPress uploader it does not appear in ftp program.
Condium Extend I ftp’d from FireFTP it appears in my ftp programbut does not appear in WordPress Themes
I’m completely confused.
Condium Extend might be broken, upload it again and it’ll work.
Check if you have enough permissions for FTP and contact your hosting support.

I have three blogs: one is a testing site, the other two are real live blogs, with real content. This morning I downloaded a new theme happy-halloween to my testing blog via the WordPress interface and it shows up perfectly in both WordPress AND my ftp program.
Also I downloaded the same theme to the blog I’m having problems with.
I activated happy-halloween and went to my ftp program, it does not appear in my ftp program. However, when I checked it out on the internet it was the new download which was showing.
All themes are in the WordPress ‘Themes’ directory.
Very, very confusing.
I have forced an update of my WordPress files via the WordPress interface with no obvious effect. I’m also thinking of ftp-ing the up to date WordPress files from my ftp program just in case some of the files got corrupted. What’s holding me back from doing this is what happens if I ftp the complete set of WordPress files to my troubled blog will it have any affect on the content and/or themes already there.
For my money the solution lies with this warning given in the WordPress Themes page:
Broken Themes
The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.
Name Description
_notes Stylesheet is missing.
I have deleted every theme in turn and reinstalled them all without effect the above warning notice still remains.
Many thanks for your continued support.

Hi guys, just off the phone to my ISP and we went around all the settings and we eventually discovered a small bug caused by them that was causing the problem. He was able to fix it from his end and everything now seems to be working as normal.
Many thanks for the help and advice

While my ftp program and WordPress are now on talking terms I’m still puzzled as to why I’m still getting this message:
Broken Themes
The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.
Name Description
_notes Stylesheet is missing.
Even though at the time of writing I only have the default theme on my server.
