Harassment from another user
-
Hi, Does anyone have any suggestions for dealing with harassment from another user? The other blogger has her own blog in which she rants about me…She and her friends send me pings, emails, etc. Has anyone ever dealt with this before? Is there a way to block them from writing to me and about me, both personally and on my site?

Well, you could stop the pings from to your site by IP banning the server that the other blog is hosted on so that any requests is simply not allowed.
However, it isn’t very simple to get the other person to stop writing about you. If she is hosted on a free blog host, you could complain to them and explain what is going on and they “might” remove the blog.
If the person hosts her own blog, try and contact her host. If you can give me the domain which the other person is writing you on, I can get the webhost from that.
The next stage after that if it doesn’t stop would be legal action, however that isn’t simple. It depends on what she is writing about as it is possible it will fall under freedom of speech in most places.
If you could give me the link where this other person is about you, I can give some more help based on that (I don’t care what the other person has written about you, just want to see if it is possibly “illegal”).
Sure. It’s http://www.lottierambleson.wordpress.com. I have also asked WordPress to step in and remove any material that she posted from me or my blog.
It actually started over a little thing (I had asked her to be respectful to other posters.) You can see where I tried to make ammends here: http://kidswithoutreligion.wordpress.com/2009/05/17/come-back-if-you-like.
Please do read both pages. You will see that it is totally unjustified–much of what she writes is not true (some of it is true), so she is also slandering me. I thought about ignoring it, but her need for attention and inability to let this go is disturbing…I’m wondering if this is normal and if I should just ignore her?
Seeing that the other one is hosted on WordPress Hosted Blog, this would much better be posted at wordpress.com support forums as this one is for self hosted.
Someone on there will be able to help you much better then I. It is sad when this happened (something like this has happened to me before) and ingoring them and just moving on is a wise idea but some people just never let anything go.
To sum up, I would post on wordpress.com support forums as that forum is for WordPress hosted blogs.
Thanks. I didn’t know there was another forum. Kind regards, dm.
I discovered this posting when I began receiving hits from the link to my blog. WordPress has ignored my request to have the link removed, despite the fact that false allegations of harassment (a crime) and “slander” (actionable in civil court) constitute libel against me.
Because my respectful request was ignored, I would like to state the following, for the record:
1.) I did not continue emailing or “pinging” anyone. I simply linked to material from her blog, as is the custom when quoting other people’s work. The pingback that results is an automatic WordPress feature, not a deliberate attempt on my part to contact this person, nor does it constitute harassment by any stretch.
Because this person receives email notification of comments and pingbacks, they also went to her email account.
2.) I posted absolutely nothing that wasn’t verifiably true, which is precisely why this person received pingbacks from my blog — I linked directly to her own statements to support every word I wrote. She simply did not like what I had to say, and went to extreme measures to silence me, and even attempted to have my blog shut down.
I am only responding to this now because I am receiving hits from the link to my blog here, and the material has since been removed from public view in an effort to pacify this person who carried on day and night, for several days after everyone else involved had moved on to other things. Now I understand part of the reason:
I would suggest that in the future, WordPress staff and forum volunteers refrain from making comments like, “Something like this happened to me before”, especially when they cannot possibly know that “this” is true to begin with. Doing so seems to lend credibility to the allegations, and appears to lend WordPress’ support to the libelous statements. You might also refrain from suggesting that people take legal action without knowing whether something is actionable, as this tends to add fuel to fires that should rather be extinguished.
Thank you and good day.
