• My name is Nika, and I have been hacked (think AA meetings).

I tried to upgrade – hack still gripped my site.

I tried a new install .. well.. the install script says:

    “Already Installed
You appear to have already installed WordPress. To reinstall please clear your old database tables first.”

If I do that, I kill 3 years of blogging.

What am I to do now?

  • First, backup your database. You can pull all your blog posts from that (though it may take some time).

Second, do this: delete the index.php file from your install directory and upload a new one from the WordPress zip file and see if that helps. It looks like they installed a redirect rather than a full on hack. Do a comparison to what is in your root directory (www.yourdomain.com/wordpress or wherever) and see if that matches what the default WordPress folder has. If there are any extra files that you know you didn’t put there, delete them. You may also want to just delete everything there and upload the original files. Don’t worry, this won’t screw with your database.

Make sure your folders are CHMODed for future reference. Also, you may want to add a .htaccess to your includes folder to keep people from easily viewing your wp_config file.

    Hope that helps.
