Thanks for reaching out @michaeldamkvist. This message can occur if there is something blocking access to the Site Kit service. This could be at host or browser level. So we can determine more on this, please share the following:

    1. Your Site Health information. You can use this form to share privately if preferred.
    2. When checking the Site Kit dashboard from a Chrome browser incognito window does the same occur? This can help indicate a browser related block.
    3. Does the same occur when you install and activate this mini plugin?

Let me know if you have any questions with the above.

@michaeldamkvist Thanks for sharing the information. I can’t see anything that immediately stands out from what you have shared. Next could you please try following the troubleshooting steps here and tell me if you experience the same message while in troubleshooting mode with just Site Kit activated?

If you do experience the same when following the steps above, please try going to this URL which will create a temporary WordPress test site for you with Site Kit pre-installed. Set up Site Kit on this site and let me know if you encounter the same as on your own website.

Let me know if you have any other questions at this time.

    Thanks.

Didn-t work with the Site Kit alone.

    But !

The tastewp site works just fine.

Thanks for the additional information @michaeldamkvist. To troubleshoot this further, please share the following:

    1. Do you have any other WordPress sites on the same hosting platform, or can you create one in order to check does the same occur?
    2. Have you been able to set up Site Kit on this site previously?

Based on the above, I can provide you with some cURL checks, or some questions you can ask of your hosting provider in the event you have a firewall or feature blocking requests to and from your site and Google service.

Let me know if you have any questions with the above. Thank you

    Thanks. Here’s my reply:

     – Do you have any other WordPress sites on the same hosting platform, or can you create one in order to check does the same occur? No, not on this platform.

     – Have you been able to set up Site Kit on this site previously? Yes, it worked when I installed it 2 weeks ago but suddenly the error was shown.

Many thanks for the update @michaeldamkvist. Appreciate you sharing the additional insights. As it sounds like your site is not able to communicate with the Site Kit service, can you follow the steps outlined in this guide, which can help if this issue is related to the IPv6 protocol only, which others did reports previously. Such issues are outside of our control directly, but the mini-plugin in that guide will hopefully allow you to proceed if this is the cause in your case.

If the same occurs with the mini plugin active, I will provide you with some additional checks you can perform at host level. You’re site needs to able to communicate with sitekit.google.com, and it’s possible there is a firewall or security feature blocking this. If you’re able to set up another WordPress site within a subdirectory, which can be deleted afterwards, this could be a useful check.

Let me know if you have any questions with the above. Thank you.

Thanks. It did not work with the little plug-in, I did actually try this in a previous step. I tried to connect to google via another service and it doesn’t work either, so it must be a central blocking.

    Plugin Support Adam Dunnage

    (@adamdunnage)

@michaeldamkvist Sorry to hear that the mini-plugin didn’t work for you. You can provide some additional checks on this as James stated above. To check if your site can communicate with sitekit.google.com, you can perform the following checks via the command line below:

    curl -4 -I https://sitekit.withgoogle.com
The above will check the status if communication over IPv4
    curl -6 -I https://sitekit.withgoogle.com
The above will check the status if communication over IPv6

If you’re unsure on how to perform these are cautious about doing so then your hosting provider should be able to help you further with performing these checks. Please let us know the outcome of these which will indicate if there are any blocks over IPv4/IPv6.

Let me know if you have any questions in the meantime.

Thank you very much for guiding us through this. It was a firewall ip block on the hosting side. 🙂
