The missing half star…
When testing of the connection, I don’t know if it’s possible to have a more precise answer in case of connection error. It’s basically the same answer we get. No better guide.

In the case of some customers using Office 365 commercial account for their emails, I had to struggle to find a working solution.
There is good info on the topic for Office settings on your site but this one did not apply in this case.
– I could not get to create a specific email account on office for the website,
– nor access the Office settings,
– Had to rely on the smtp of the hosting service to send,
– Had to permit the sending of email by the host of the site via the Office server,
– And finally get the root name of the smtp service of the hosting service.
I understand that you can’t over see all possible scenarios.
