Getting a magazine layout?

Hi all,
I’m a total newbie here, and I need some help.
I took the weaver theme and I want to activate the magazine layout, but I can’t figure out how to do that. I see for the pages it offers a template for 2 columns, but I don’t see how to make that happen on the home page. It says it works with “posts with pages and weaver show posts,” what does this mean?
I would take any other theme with a magazine layout if you have an alternative that’s easy to use.
