    Hi there,

Long story short, I wanted to make a few changes to the B&B’s website but when I click on the link provided by the wordpress automatic e-mail we received after updating it to the last version, I only get the 404 error.

I’ve tried on both Chrome on a Mac and Firefox on Win10 and got the same error (while trying to find the solution in other threads I saw someone asking about this, idk if it makes any difference).

The weird thing is the owner of the B&B did a few changes like 3 weeks ago and now all of a sudden we can’t even get to the login site.

Any ideas of what may be happening?

I would really appreciate any help with this.

    Best,
    German

Let’s see if I can help.

The typical login URL is example.com/WP login.php. Is this what’s showing 404 error?

If yes, it’s possible that it was hidden by a security plugin. So the URL is custom. Do you know if any security plugins are installed?

Since you also did an update recently, try checking out this help article:

    Hi ProjectArmy,

Thank you for trying to help me out with this!

Yes, the url that’s giving me trouble is:
    https://aratingailhagrande.com.br/2014/wp-admin/

    (it’s basically the B&B website plus “2014/wp-admin/”)

I asked the owner and she’s not aware of any security plugins but unfortunately we have no idea how wordpress works as the website was created by other people and we just do small changes here and there to it (holiday rates, packages, etc).

I read the help article in the link you provided but I have 3 questions:

    1) Is there something like a default WP admin url?
I’m thinking that maybe the update changed the url we used to have and now it’s back to the default url, which would explain why we are getting the 404 error.

    2) Can I get to that file if I can’t even access my WP admin website?
In my really small knowledge of WP I’m assuming it’s not like you install a software on the pc and then you can go through the files offline as it looks you do everything from the WP admin website.

    3) If I manage to get my hands on that file, is there any possibility that I’ll mess up with the website in any way?
I never touched WP as the owner told me she once did something by mistake and had to restore the website from scratch.

Thanks again for your time and help,
    German

    Hi

A little update on this: I should have googled it instead of askinga about the default URL for the admin site. However I tried with whatever URLs I found but none of them worked.

Yes, I do see that it’s not working. Our next step would be to disable all plugins via FTP, to see if any of them cause this issue. Do you have FTP access or access to control panel like cPanel for hosting? This is how you access actual files of the website.

Hi again ProjectArmy, thank you for the help!

I have to be honest with you: I have no idea what I’m doing haha.
After gooling what it was, I got into cPanel and found the wp-login.php using the File manager.

Now that I have access to the files, what would be -in your opinion- the next step?

Thanks again for the help (and specially for the patience!)

If you want to try replacing wp-login.php, you can download fresh copy of WordPress, unzip it, then delete wp-login.php in cPanel and upload the fresh version from your computer. You can download latest copy here:
    https://wordpress.org/download/

This is a long shot, if it doesn’t work you’ll need to disable all plugins as I described in my previous answer.
