• Hi, I’m new to WordPress. I’ve added Google Maps Builder 1.0.3, and built a map with a lot of markers. However, that map does not geolocate, (according the users location) and it doesn’t offer ‘Directions’ on the top left like a customised Google Map does. My website is essentially for people travelling to find exactly where they are, and find the nearest mechanic (place marker). I can’t quite see the advantage in using this plug-in, as opposed to a normal customised Google Map, because it doesn’t have any functionality. Am I missing something? Assuming I’m not, and this solution doesn’t work for me, will I have to re-create the map in Google Maps? Is the map I’ve created ACTUALLY a Google Custom Map, if so, how can I get the url to link to it from my site? Thank you.

    Hi @LisaB111

The plugin does actually build the map for you with the map markers. Yes, you can recreate your own map with Google Maps directly — it’s a powerful tool — but this plugin allows you to do that within your WordPress site with a UI.

But, as far as Geolocation is concerned, it’s not clear to me how that would be helpful. If all your mapmarkers are in Kansas, but your visitor is in Germany, they won’t see any of your map marker and instead see Germany.

Can you provide a link to a page on your site where you’re using our plugin and tell me what you’d like to see happening there instead?

Also, we’re in the middle of major development for this plugin and have lots of great features and plans for it in the very near future. Make sure you’re signed up for our newsletter as we’ll be communicating there a lot for these new features: http://eepurl.com/bgG1MP

Let me know about the link and let’s get this going for you as much as possible now. Thanks!

    Hi, thanks for replying.

The geolocation is crucial because our website is about touring the UK on classic scooters, and the map pinpoints scooter workshops. So when the user breaks down, somewhere in the UK, I want them to be able to look on the map (via smartphone or tablet) and establish exactly where they are, and where the nearest workshop will be. There are enough workshops on the map that the user will always be near at least one. There’s no point in anyone from outside the UK looking at it.

Here’s my link, but I’m not sure how useful that will be to you, because it doesn’t show the map. http://www.scooteringbritain.co.uk/?page_id=105 What I’d to happen is that the user can view our map and the map will automatically geolocate, and then the user will have the option to search the directions box on the top left of the screen, to establish the best route to the scooter workshop.

    Many thanks

    Lisa

Hi, would it be possible to answer please?

    Hi Lisa,

I can understand your use-case now. We don’t have that feature yet, but I’ll add it to our list for our development cycle. We are investing in this plugin more so, as I mentioned, keep an eye out on our progress.

    Thanks!
