General downloads limit

Hello!
I want to add a feature to Download Monitor where I can add another value next to the sum of the download counts for all the items, which will be entered by the admin and will work as an absolute limit for every download (which means that when this number is equal to the general sum of downloads, further downloads will be blocked until the limit goes up again)
The purpose of this is for a website that will offer free ebook downloads to users, but the amount of downloads will depend on the number of downloads that were sponsored by different brands.
I’m just looking for some general advice on how to accomplish this using the plugin. Which files to alter, which actions or filters are key, how to add another field to which table, etc…
