• Hi everyone…

I am a photographer that is working on setting up a site. I have set up galleries for my photos, and when I view the individual gallery pages, some of the images just refuse to show up. Some do and some don’t. I thought it was a size issue as I hadn’t compressed the images sizes first, but after compressing all of them and removing the larger versions from the site some of the thumbs still aren’t showing.

If you click on the non-thumb you can still bring up the larger version of the photo.

Please help me!! I don’t know what else to do to make all the photo thumbnails in the galleries appear as they should.

  • Unless you provide a link to a page demonstrating the problem, no one will be able to offer much in the way of assistance.

Yeah…sorry. I was exhausted from trying to figure things out. Here’s one of the gallery links
    http://www.lenstripping.com/?gallery=seasons-fall

However all of them have some thumbnails that aren’t showing up, and this one has none of them showing up
    http://www.lenstripping.com/?gallery=old-mills

The thing is, even when you don’t see the thumbnail, if you click on the empty spot for where the thumbnail should be, the preview of the picture actually comes up fine and you are able to scroll through to the next picture with no problems.

Your site is using Timthumb to generate thumbnail images. Apart from the fact that it doesn’t seem to be working, older versions of Timthumb pose a major security risk to your site. Unless you have updated the theme (or relevant plugin) in the last few weeks, I’d suggest changing your theme (or removing the relevant plugin) asap.

Fantastic! =-/ Thanks Esmi. I just purchased this theme, and Timthumb is incorporated within the theme and not something that I can deactivate or remove through the plugins section in the admin. I can email the programmer that created it to find out if he’ll tell me how to deactivate Timthumb (unless you have an idea), but is there something that I can use in it’s place that 1) that actually works and 2) is significantly more secure?

Thanks for your help…I appreciate it, truly.

If the theme is using Timthumb, then it’s likely to be extremely difficult to remove it. But you could ask the developer if he is aware of this issue and if he has patched his theme accordingly.

You don’t have to use this script to generate or display thumbnail versions of larger images. WordPress has been able to do this itself for a few years now.

Thanks again, Esmi. I’ve emailed the programmer to see what I can see. Not necessarily the answers I wanted to hear, but at least it’s an answer to work with.

Please let us know the outcome, I am looking to get my photos on as well. I just started testing word press for that purpose.

Bogdan…As of this moment there is no response from the programmer for the theme that I purchased.

When I had gone to post him about the problem I saw that someone else was having the same thumbnail problem with the same theme.

However, I’ll be sure to keep this post updated once I hear (or if I hear) something from him regarding this issue.

Ok…as promised here is an update. Sorry if this is long…it was a bit of a roller coaster.

After talking with the programmer of the theme he said that the reason why the thumbnails weren’t showing up was because the PHP memory allocation on my server wasn’t high enough, and it needed to be increased.

I talked with the programmer that handles our server, and he increased the PHP memory allocation and restarted the server. It didn’t solve the problem, and it was causing a memory error and was calling on the Timthumb script.

I informed the theme’s programmer that increasing the server’s PHP memory allocation didn’t fix the problem. He refused to believe that the problem wasn’t the server. He then requested login information to my WP account as well as FTP access. I set up special logins for both, and he did a screen capture of an error that showed one of my photos causing 500 error (but was also calling on the Timthumb script).

I emailed my programmer about it and asked him why an image would cause a 500 error. He told me it was a memory issue still. At the end of my rope I asked him what he though I should do as I felt like I was ramming my head on a wall. He was kind enough to look into the Timthumb.php script and saw there was the following line…

define (‘MEMORY_LIMIT’, ’30M’); // Set PHP memory limit

He increased the limit in the script from ’30M’ to ‘3000M’ and magically all of the thumbnails are now showing as they should!!! Woo hoo!

Hope this helps someone else in their journey! Bogdan good luck! I hope this helps!

    Thanks Jewell

WOW,…… 3000M = 3GB that is more than most peoples computer memory.
    Thanks for that

    Nice photos btw
Oh, I thought I mention this, that I can view and download hires version of the photos (original resolution) and just want to make sure you are aware of this. This mean that people can just copy and use them for their work and not give you any credit for it. The original EXIF data can be replaced and reentered as their own if they dishonest. You hope that the publication will not go unpunished for doing that but you never know you would have to know that some obscure place in Poland is printing your photos ….. ?

    Cheers

    Bogdan…

Re: the timthumb.php script…you are right, but it definitely seemed to fix the problem as it was overriding what the PHP memory allocation was set for. =)

Do you know of additional things that I can do to keep my photos from being stolen? I’m doing everything I know to do, but honestly there are so many ways that people smarter than I am can get to them. I’d like to do everything that I can to make that as hard for them as possible. I’d really prefer someone in Poland or anywhere else not taking my work without credit. =)

If you have tips or tricks that I might be able to understand and implement I would appreciate them. Feel free to email me if you’d like at lenstripping -at- gmail -dot- com

Thank you for the complement on my photos, by the way. I appreciate it. =)

    Jewell =)
