FTP with Custom Port

    Hi. I’m unable to get Updraftplus to log into an FTP server with a custom port. I am able to access the FTP Server from ftp clients and web browsers, however, it fails every time when I put it into Updraftplus.

    As a test, I changed the port on the server back to 21 and Updraftplus connected fine but when I changed it back, it was unable to log in again.

    I’m putting it into the server field in this format: nameofftplocation:99999
    Is there something I’m missing?

    Hi,

    That is how to do it. If it fails, it’s likely to be firewalling between your webserver and FTP server. Lots of firewalls can’t cope with custom FTP ports (the FTP protocol is complex, using two channels, and so firewalls are usually scanning only the default port to look for things to open up based on what goes through there).

    Ok. Thanks. At least I know it’s nothing I’m doing wrong in the settings.

    Ok. I just setup a local wordpress site using WAMP and installed the newest version of UpdraftPlus free. I then pointed it locally to the ftp server we have setup (with no firewall in between, including Windows firewall) and it fails when I use a port other than 21. When we switched it back to 21, it worked fine.
    It’s only when we change the port to something else that it doesn’t work.

    If you test the FTP connection with a non-default port, what is the error message that is returned?

    Here is the message I get:

    “FTP settings test result: Failure: we did not successfully log in with those credentials.”

    But it only does it when I’m not using port 21. The credentials are correct as they work when I change the port back to 21 from the custom port.

    Hi Jason,

    The problem’s in your networking or firewalling somewhere… UD definitely works with non-default ports. We have other people using it, and I’ve just run some tests.

    Can you find another WP plugin that makes an FTP connection of any sort, and verify if that works?
