FTP upload plugins blocked by host (SSL)

I’m trying to run an FTP plugin to give non-logged in users the ability to upload via the browser. However my hosting provider requires that the files are either stored via a secure area making the domain name unworkable or asking me to purchase their SSL certificate. I’ve looked at SSL plugins and .htaccess but still can’t seem to find a work around. Any solutions would be welcome.
