Hi – I tried several plugins but I found them very hard to configure.
So my solution was to use the open source PHPBB (many hosts have a one click installation for this very popular app) and then link to it from wordpress – if you are using WP 3 and the theme support menus its easy to add an external link to point to the PHPBB install.

use BBpress, it easily fits in to your wordpress site and is hassle-free (basically).
Just google BBpress and the rest is simple

The simplest and quickest way to have a forum within your WordPress Installation is to use the Mingle forum plugin – http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/mingle-forum/
Once installed and activated you can configure all the settings within the WP Dashbaord.
Yup there are many options. I use simple:press, which I really like. bbpress is good.
Buddypress may be a bit much for your needs, its got a lot of social networking aspects to it, but it also comes with a forum
