The free installation worked well for my first blog <http://www.chapelinthepines.org/blog>. I’m unfamiliar w. php but familiar w. XHTML and CSS.
Q. 1 — Where do I find the Home or index page so I can modify it?

Q. 2 — Where do I find the About page so I can modify it as well?

Q. 3 — Does everyone keep the Blogrole links and Meta links? I see no value in them for my blog. If not, where do I make the deletions?

Q. 4 — The description on the Options page of the WP admin panel is confusing. Can you please tell me in lay terms what I’m to do/change with the small (1kb) “.htaccess” file I found in my “www” directory?

Q. 5 — I use the WP Default theme. Can the calendar be applied to it? If so, how?

In advance, I’ll thank you very much for helping me get started with a blog.

• When I install a new gizmo (be it even a blogging tool like WP) my first thing is to study for a day ALL the feature, buttons, options in its admin panel and to READ the manual. But I might be a bit old-fashioned…

1. In your theme.
2. In your admin panel.
3. No. Admin panel.
4. Where in the Options? It has a lot of subpanels…
5. Get familiar with the Template_Tags

Thanks, old fashioned Moshu. ( ;+}
May I follow up on your e-reply, by question?
1. In your theme: I opened Presentation > Themes and found no specific name. It says, “The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a style sheet and a template.” There’s nothing under the title “Name” and it says “Stylesheet is missing.” Am I looking in the wrong location for my Home page that I want to modify?
2. In your admin panel: Where in my admin panel do I find and modify the About page? I haven’t found it.
3. (already addressed β€” thanks)
4. Where in the Options panel?: My bad. I meant to say Permalinks, as on <http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks>. I can’t tell how to implement a chosen Permalink.
5. Get familiar with Template Tags: That I will. Thanks for the suggestion, Moshu.

I eagerly await your detailed e-reply.

1. I never use the online theme editor. It’s dangerous. Edit your files on your computer in a plain text editor.
1a. If ALL your themes are incomplete… you screwed up something during the upload.
2. Since it is Page (as in Pages) – Manage > Pages
(here comes the requirement: click on every freaking button in your admin panel before asking questions πŸ™‚
3. –
4. Where it says in the submenu: Permalinks
5. Good. That will mean less questions…

Q. 1 — I agree. I’d certainly want to edit my files offline (in DW). Thanks for the cautionary note.
A. 1a — The install was done by Jeremy, a WordPress volunteer. I mistakenly changed the path to the style sheet. There’s no error message now.
Q. 2 — ( ; +} Thanks. I made the desired modifications; saved it as I proceeded.
Q. 3 — n/a
Q. 4 — After getting the reminder, “You should update your .htaccess now,” I copy/pasted the mod_rewrite rules onto the .htaccess page (below the last entry), saved it and uploaded it. Yet, after uploading Permalink structure again, the same message appears. Should I do something in addition to what I’ve done?
Q. 5 — Yes, I am sorry for the questions. I continue to read the manual and hope you’ll forgive me for having asked my questions prematurely.

Currently, Q. 4 is the only unanswered question/concern. I hope you won’t mind addressing it for me. Thanks, in advance, Moshu.

As a matter of opinion,

— Lots of people use the theme editor without a problem. It is a built-in Feature of WP. Proceed with backups and mind the security concerns, you can use it. Editing with a text editor is a recommended alternative. If you’re going to use a text editor try Notepad+++ or PSPad, or just plan Notepad.

— Never click every button in your admin before asking questions, that sounds very risky, there are a lot of buttons you wouldn’t want to press if you aren’t sure. Perhaps the advice meant checking every sub-menu in the admin tabs to see what options are offered ~ a good idea to get to know your WP better.

— Your support questions are welcomed here. Questions should not be discouraged here. Try searching for your answer first, if you can’t figure something out then post a question with your details. Hopefully someone will volunteer some suggestions. It might work best to put specific individual questions in the appropriate sections of the forum, just be specific as possible in the subject, because I’m not sure what all is resolved or left-open in the above dialog.

As to Q4. There is no need to fiddle with .htaccess at all. Folk who need to fiddle generally know how to fiddle. At this stage it might be best to leave it well alone. For the unwary it is a snakepit of Linux voodoo.

Thanks “Dgold” and “Root” for weighing in.

Because Q. 4 was the outstanding question, and because Root feels no need for me to fiddle any further with .htaccess, I’ll call it quits on this thread and begin styling and formatting my new blog.

BTW, Root: Do you edit your “More 404” blog in an editor (such as Dreamweaver) or do you use the WP admin panels?

Thanks again . . . .

I bet Root’s answer will be “none of the above” πŸ™‚
No DW and no online editor.

(and take a closer look at the footer…)

None of the above. And yes. Check the footer. πŸ™‚
You need to know that I am from the generation that started out waaay before Windows was invented. We are talking BBC Micros and Radio Shack. In fact my very first programme ran on something the size of a house. Seriously. Consequently I am strictly a text editor guy. Kate, Vi, Pico. That is it.

(…And yes. Check the footer. :))

Would one or both of you kindly give me some meaningful commentary regarding “footer.” You obviously know what you both are referring to, however, I’m in the dark.

Footer on what site? What page? At what in that footer am I to specifically take a closer look?

Please give me accurate directions/suggestions. Thanks very much.

You asked a question about the more404 site.
We answered to it.
The “footer” of a site is… eh, the foot = the bottom.
On Root’s site it says:

Turbocharged by TextPattern

which is a clear sign it is NOT a WordPress blog, so he cannot use the WP admin panel as you presumed. So, the morale was: don’t presume. Look at the facts.

Thanks for your interest anyway. πŸ™‚
The software is immaterial. That set up could be implemented in WP using a text editor very easily.

Thanks, Root, for your clarification. I understand and I appreciate your feedback in each case.

Moshu: On the other hand, I’m sorry to see a personality such as yours having the title/responsibility of Moderator. You have been harsh, sarcastic, and insensitive to my introductory questions about setting up my first WP blog. You could have approached my blogging unfamiliarity with gentle guidance. Instead, you chose to be critical and condescending.

You obviously have talent, Moshu. Unfortunately, you lack the personality, patience, and social compatibility requisite of a forum moderator.

Nevertheless, I’m appreciative of the comments made by Root and Dgold. Thanks to you both for your personal assistance.
