first-timer cost question

Just installed woocom cart. Is purchasing a license after adding an extension required to use that extension, or can it be utilited without the one year support / updates? (no license)
Also, if I pay for the extensions, will they stop working after a year if I dont renew them?
Woo’s website is no help in explaining these things and no reply received from their support.
