First time user, "Error establishing a database connection" when installing

    Hi guys,

    i’be found many questions CLOSE to what i’ve been asking but none of the solutions worked for me. Im using a Mac btw.

    This is the first time i’ve ever used WP so be gentle!
    (I inherited this site for a friend who wanted me to just redesign but i’ve had to get more involved than expected that site was up and running fine before I took some advice and deleted any old data in the public-html folder to replace with word press’s folders)

    Ive followed the steps in Cpanel to create a database and associate it with a username. i’ve loaded the .zip folder into the public_html folder and unzipped (this is after inputting my DB user and password into the wp-config.php and changing the name as such)

    when the .zip extracts it leaves two folders, both looking identical one labelled wordpress and the other _macosx. I’ve checked the contents of these folders and they seem identical.

    Anyway I am at the point of typing my url into my browser followed by /wp-config/install.php and it brings up this message;

    “The requested URL /wp-config/install.php was not found on this server.

    Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.”

    ok i thought, lets just type in the site url on its own and I get this;

    Index of /

    __MACOSX/
    mobile/
    wordpress.zip
    wordpress/

    clicking through these folders causes bugger all to happen, even if i click the install.php file I get a quarantine message as such;

    Im SO SO totally stuck and now I have gone and messed up a perfectly working website, albeit out of date

    Can ANYONE help?

    The __MACOSX/ folder is not required for any installation of WordPress.

    Typically when you visit the wordpress/ folder in your browser you should be brought to an install screen.

    You will not visit wp-config.php during the install process, the only item you should be doing with that is renaming it from wp-config-sample.php to wp-config.php. Please reference http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress

    thanks for the assist,

    I found that the _macosx is a sneaky file that doesn’t mean anything why is created by default by macs when you zip folders. I managed to get around this by finding a zip app that doesn’t add any of that gubbibs.

    The solution I found in the end was to create the wp-config in CPanel manually using the edit feature in the files section.
