Filter for pictures/videos (plugin?)

Hi,

I would like to create a media page on my website to show pictures and videos from different things. My ideas is to put a kind of “filter bar” on top center of the page to choose from different categories of pictures. For that, I will need to put pictures in differents categories on only one page (all that sorted by date)… After that, the filter will be linked to the categories. When you will choose X category for exemple, the other pictures or videos will disappear and you will only have the one from this category.

I don’t know if it’s possible with WordPress via a plugin, because I’m just learning at school right now. I know about HTML5 and CSS3, but PHP is another world for me right now.
