• I was just notified by a reader that Feedburner hasn’t been updating my subscribers for at least a month now. Evidently there is a blank line at the top of my XML file. I have gone through all my plug-ins and there are no extra lines at the top before the <php ? code.

I keep getting this on Feedburner: “

The URL you entered does not appear to be a valid feed. We encountered the following problem: Error on line 2: The processing instruction target matching “[xX][mM][lL]” is not allowed.

Any help – this is driving me crazy!

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

I have deactivated all plug-ins and that didn’t help.
I switched to the Twenty Eleven theme – no help either.

I don’t have any inactive plugins – i just delete them if I don’t use them… Should I still try resetting the folder?

    Thanks Esmi.

    Site url?

Can we see the site using Twenty Eleven with all plugins deactivated?

    ok, done.

Wow! That increased the site’s download speed by a factor of about 10! But you still have RSS feed issues. Try re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.

Ok, I am about to do that. Will I have to rebuild the blog?

Nope. Everything will be safe inside your database.

    ok done!

Looks like that worked for the RSS feed validator! Can I reinstate everything (and think about changing themes so the download speed is better!)?

Yay! Your feed is now working! πŸ™‚

Now you need to switch back to your old them to see if the feed breaks. Don’t activate any plugins yet.

Ok, switched to the old theme and now it’s broken again πŸ™

and think about changing themes so the download speed is better

I think it would be worthwhile spending some time determining what was slowing the site down so badly before. It took me three attempts to load the site with the old theme & all plugins running because the server kept timing out. With 2011 and no plugins, the home page loaded in 2 or 3 seconds – a huge difference in performance.

I was assuming it was the flash header with 6 different images that was slowing it down… Wow. that is crazy!
