So what you may consider doing, is marking the posts you don’t want to show as excerpts and show featured images of as sticky posts. This means they will stay at the top. For example, http://zerodistraction.com uses this technique. This highlights that first post pretty well.

I have the same request, but it is a bit different. When I use except option I would like the featured image of the post displayed as it is when you have the full posts displayed. This isn’t the sticky post issue, but for all posts.
Perhaps a “Allow featured images on entry excerpts” option?
Or perhaps I am missing it?

I think this is the best solution to the issue. I’m going to roll this in with the next update which I am going to prepare this week.
This option is now available in the latest version of Decode (2.8.2)!

There is now an option for this “Display a post’s featured image on its individual page.” in the settings under Reading Options.
