Featured image: optimal size for multiple formats?

    The recommended default image sizes are great, but often a featured image is shown in several formats – on the sidebar plus on a list of posts.

    Currently, if I make an image fit optimally for blog post lists, parts are cut off on the sidebar and vice versa.

    Is there an optimal image size that works for both locations? Or something I can do to force them to use the same proportions?
