• When I make an image a featured image for a post, it nearly doubles in filesize (in this case from 151kb to 265kb)

I’m a little stumped as to why this is happening. The image itself is 1038×576. If I insert the very same image into a post it’s 151kb. It only behaves like this when it’s set as a featured image.

    What am I missing here?

  • Hi @jvandorp,

I tested it on my test site using Twenty Fourteen theme and WordPress 3.8 but couldn’t reproduce the same issue. It displayed both the images sizes same.

Are you using any plugin that is processing images?

If yes then try deactivating the plugin.

Could you please share me the page link where you have used both the images so that i can troubleshoot it?

    Kind Regards,

Hey WPMU thanks for the response,

    Here is an example:

    http://twentyfourteen.johnnyvandorp.com/fork/

In this case the featured image is 214kb vs 151 in the post—both are 1038×576 (natural size).

The same thing is happening to me – my front page looks horrible. I am used to using studio press genesis. How can I make my posts look orderly without a widget please!

    Hi Heather Hess,

How can I make my posts look orderly without a widget please!

As per the Forum Welcome, please post your own topic.

    Cheers,

    Hi @jvandorp,

I checked it on the provided page link and found it’s displaying different image sizes.

Could you please answer my following previous questions.

Are you using any plugin that is processing images?

If yes then try deactivating the plugin.

Also make sure it is happening only with Twenty Fourteen theme and not with any other default theme like Twenty Twelve.

    Best Regards,

    Hey WPMU,

No plugins. The link I sent you was literally a fresh install just to test this issue.

I tried with TwentyTwelve locally as well, and the image filesize is the same in an identical test as the one I posted here.

Another thing I noticed is that in TwentyTwelve the theme uses literally the same image to display both the featured image, and the one placed into the post. So on the Network tab of chrome devtools the image is only loaded once.

In the case of TwentyFourteen, the theme creates another version of the file where it appends the image dimensions onto the filename as so:

    Hi @jvandorp,

I again tried to reproduce the same issue on my test site using Twenty Fourteen them but i couldn’t.

Could you please create test account on your site and send me credentials using our secured contact form so that i can test it there?

    done.

    Hi @jvandorp,

Thank you for sending me the details.

I tested on your site creating new post using new image but i could not reproduce the same thing.

Could you please try creating new post and using different image?

    WPMU,

In your test they were indeed different filesizes (and dimensions too)

    Chrysanthemum.jpg
    859kb

    vs

    Chrysanthemum-1024×576.jpg
    226kb

though because your image wasn’t the native size for the featured image on twentyfourteen (1038×576) it was scaled automagically, so that may account for part of the size difference.

I feel like we’re spinning tires, so I’m happy to just close this issue if you are.
