• I want to migrate away from [WP-GPX-Maps] but need the ability to display image thumbnails for those photos on the page which have GPS coordinates. Is that something that [GPX Route Map] can do now, or maybe in the future? I’m happy to help with development / testing / translation if required.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

You mean display little thumbnails instead of the icons?

I have not tested WP-GPX-Maps, but I’m not sure how do you add the images associated to the waypoints. Currently the plugin is simple: you don’t have much control over the waypoints. You can set the waypoints in the GPX file and they will display, but how you would associate those waypoints with the images?

I was thinking in the future, to add some sort of CPT called “Waypoints” that could be associated with the map waypoints somehow. For example, you could create many CPT of that kind, and then edit the GPX file and add some sort of metadata (for example, the slugs of the CPT), so we could add metadata to each waypoint (which could be things like a link, a little description, an image, selecting icon to the waypoint, etc…)

But this would be a major overhaul on the plugin. I need to think it better.

Thanks for the very quick response Manuel, I appreciate that a lot. Right now we’re travelling in SE Asia so I’m a little behind.

When using [WP-GPX-Maps] you don’t have to have any waypoints in the GPX file at all, the plugin just looks at all the images which are added to a page, including those in carousels, and if they have GPS data they appear on the map. I don’t think they have to be on the actual track, but in my use case they invariably are because the track is created by me and I’m the one holding the camera.

My preference would be to assign classes to those images which I would want to see on the map. That way I could also assign a class to each map on the page, and control which images appear on which map, in case there are multiple.

The important thing however is that the GPX file should not need any waypoint information in order to display the images, because that makes the workflow complicated. I normally just take the GPX file exported from my Garmin device and upload it straight to WordPress for use. OK, for longer files I filter them using Basecamp in order to reduce the number of points, but you get the idea. If I had to manually add waypoints and file metadata into the GPX it would be too cumbersome.

As before I’m happy to help. My PHP is a bit rusty but HTML and CSS not too bad. 😉
