• I had WP for an old site that was lightly used and abandoned pretty shortly after it was set up.

I had my personal blog located on Blogger.com and it had it’s own custom domain name. I knew WP offered a ton more features and was overall just a much more robust platform. So I recently moved my personal blog over to the old and unused WP platform I had for my other site I never did anything with. I also had a custom professional blog designing company totally redo my site. They use the “Genesis” Framework?

Anyway, I am very FRESH to using WP on a daily basis and am trying to get some things set up the way I want, and on blogger.com there was a way to add blogs you subscribed to, to your sidebar that would then also show a little icon for that blog, and also would put the last time that blog was updated.

The plug-ins list is a bit overwhelming! I am sure there is probably a plug-in for something that will do this. It was separate, and different than just regular links. I have links set up already. I tried typing “subscribed blogs” “favorite blogs” and a couple other things. Is there a plug-in that is just dedicated to linking to blogs that *I* subscribe to. Like a “favorite” blog list, and/or that will also show when they last posted?

Also, while I am at it, is there any plug-ins that avid WP users find they cannot “live without?” LOL! I am excited about my change over to WP and just want to learn the platform really well. There are so many things even just on the “Posts” page that I am like ??? and I consider myself fairly computer literate… I mean I work for Apple as a Mac Expert! Yet, I am feeling so dumb with some of this stuff! LOL! I am able to navigate and get around by all means. But there is so much I need to learn. For right now just want to mostly know if there is a plug-in for what I am asking for. 🙂

  • I think this is what you want – it was actually part of WP core until 3.5 when it was moved to a plugin –

Doing is the best way to learn it – for all of us :). And just ask questions when you get stuck!

You might also want to check out JetPack plugin – it has many features/options that many people like –

Thank you… I downloaded it, but don’t really see anything different. I already have a Links area in my admin panel… It allows me to categorize them, and add new, etc. I used that for just regular links in my side bar I wanted.

I am looking for something that is geared specifically to linking to blogs and showing the blogs I subscribe to. In blogger, they had links separate, and then favorite blogs you would add blogs you subscribe to and it would show snippets of the last blog entry that person made, as well as how long since their last entry. I don’t find anything like that for WordPress.

The links manager, IS it something different than what I described I already have? If so, where would I locate it? I have it installed and activated. I already have the JetPack plug in.

Ah, okay, I didn’t fully understand what you were asking. I think the only way to do that is by using an RSS plugin or one that connects to networked sites – blogger (and WordPress.COM ) has that functionality because all the sites on the platform are connected on the same network. Self-hosted WordPress.ORG sites are not connected to each other.

See if any of these do what you are looking for:
