Got everything up, but nothing shows except this error message:

Fatal error: Unknown function: the_id() in /home/aic/public_html/wordpress/wp-content/themes/default/index.php on line 9

What do I do about that?

Is this a brand-new install? Has it ever worked?
Did you run the install.php?

Thanks for the reply. It’s a new install, has not worked yet. It said “already installed” when I wan the install.php. I get the control pannel page just fine, but can’t post anything, just variations of the same fatal error message shows.

The error being shown right now would lead me to theorize that your upload went south.

I’d re-upload and be sure to transfer the .php files in txt (ascii) mode.
