Support » Fixing WordPress » Fatal Error: Class 'WP_Post_Type' not found

  • After updating to the new version Tuesday, I now have this on every webpage of my blog, including the admin (so I cannot log on to the dashboard at all):
Fatal error: Class ‘WP_Post_Type’ not found in /homepages/0/d179334845/htdocs/ofthingsandwhatnot/wp-includes/post.php on line 1031

In the post.php line 1031 reads:
    $post_type_object = new WP_Post_Type( $post_type, $args );

I have followed the sugestions to block plugins by changing the folder to “plugins.hold” – no luck
I even deleted all the themes except “twentyfifteen”, as also suggested, – no luck.
    My PHP is 5.6 ( – host)

    Please advise.

    Thank you!

    Hi there,

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with the update.

It sounds like the update might not have completed successfully, but it also seems like you’re somewhat familiar with FTP or a file manager judging by your attempts at plugin and theme changing, which is great!

In this case I would recommend trying a manual update (this is essentially just downloading a .zip file and using the FTP program or file manager to upload the files and replace any files it asks if you’d like to replace), the steps for doing so can be found at

Thank you. I uploaded the update and manually installed it.
I think it is working now. Thank you!!

    (edited because I forgot a file…)

I am hoping you can help me with a similar issue. I have just updated to the latest version of wordpress and am now locked out with this error message:
Fatal error: Class ‘WP_Post_Type’ not found in /var/www/vip15/sites/vip0447923/httpd/htdocs/wp-includes/post.php on line 1031
Unlike Pam, I have limited knowledge of the inner workings of the sytem and would really appreciate some help / guidance please.

@elyman you have to upload WordPress files from the version you need.

All the files and folders excluding wp-content folder.

After that, WordPress will ask you to update the database.

Detailed reference in this WP Codex url.

    Good luck!

    Thanks Pablo,
The service provider rolled it back and provided suggestions about the plugins we are using.
