• I recently tried to update all of the plugins on my wordpress site as it was notifying me that they are out of date. I pressed update all, but as soon I tried to refresh the page, or access any part of the dashboard or the site itself, I get the following error:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare stats_activate() (previously declared in /hermes/waloraweb092/b2017/pow.esscoca/htdocs/wp-content/plugins/stats/stats.php:839) in /hermes/waloraweb092/b2017/pow.esscoca/htdocs/wp-content/plugins/wp-stats/wp-stats.php on line 905

I have no experience with websites at all really, so I have no idea how to fix this at all. I know it has something to do with renaming the folders using FTP, but I’m not sure how to do that. If someone could please explain, it would be much appreciated.

If you can’t access your admin pages, you’ll need to use an FTP client (like FileZilla), or your host’s cPanel (or File Manager) and navigate to the plugin on the server.

In your WP installation there, find wp-content/plugins and rename the stats plugin folder to stats-hold. Hopefully that should allow you to get back into WP admin. Then you can try re-installing or updating it again.

If this isn’t something you’re comfortable doing yourself, your web-host support would probably do this for you, or at least help you set up FTP access. Most of them also have help docs to walk you through how to use both FTP (or SFTP) and their FIle Manager.
