Extra large photo images

I think I understand now about how to do the basics in gallery themes (newbie at this!), but it seems that if you choose “featured image” before publishing, an image will be resized/diminished. Many of the full sized versions of my photos are wall size or bigger and I don’t really want those downsized. Is there a plugin or a script that would prevent this happening?
