Excerpt_size filtering out special characters

I write film reviews, which always start with a star rating, e.g. ★★★★½. So, when using the plugin I’d like it to display the film title, then the star rating. But if I use excerpt_size=1, it displays the star rating and the first word of the review, which looks clunky.
It doesn’t seem to count the special characters like ★ or ½ as being legitimate text. Is there a way to make that happen?
