Events Calendar – I'm lost!

I’m using a child theme of Twenty Eleven to create a website for a client, using the single column, no sidebar page layout.

I want to have an events calendar on one of the pages that the client will be able to manage with limited permissions (using User Role Editor plugin). I’d like the calendar itself to display on the Local Events page on the front end, with the events in a popup when you click on the calendar date.

I’ve downloaded Event Geek, played with creating the calendar, and published an event or two. I used the shortcode to add the event list to the main content area of the page. But I’m missing something, I think. Even when I switch this page to use “sidebar template”, and drag the Event Geek Calendar Widget into the Main Sidebar area in the widget administration page, the calendar itself does not show up on the page when I view it.
