Espied and Portfolio Short Codes

I believe I read that the Portfolio Shortcode should use the formatting built into the theme you’re using it with.

I created a new page with the portfolio shortcode for a subset (by tag) of posts. That’s fine.

But the format of the “normal” portfolio page in Espied has text overlaying the featured image on hover and there is no extra space between portfolio items. Contrariwise, the portfolio shortcode page has text below the featured image and there is space between the images as well. Did I misunderstand how the shortcode uses the theme’s formatting? Or am I missing something in the setup of the shortcode?
