I have a Bitnami WordPress instance on amazon EC2. We’ve had WordPress running for about a month. It started as a problem uploading media files in WordPress’ admin section with the media uploader, and receiving “error unable to receive attachment” messages, then a quote widget disappeared. I’d changed the permissions via FTP (Filezilla) of wp-content based on “solutions” from other support forums, to 777 (then changed it back) and it started working again. After a short time, it reverted back having the same issues, and then we couldn’t install new plugins after this as well. Went and changed the permissions again, and our website went blank (all, including admin). Based on another “solution” I’d found I placed a line of code in the wp-config file and tried to upload that, but it won’t write, says 0kb, and now I can’t write anything to the instance. What should I do?
Can you replicate the problem using the default Twenty Twelve theme with all plugins deactivated?
I have not, and unfortunately I cannot access the admin panel to switch the theme or turn off plugins. Everything is white (blank) in safari and firefox, and says server error (500) in chrome. I should have probably tried your suggestion first.
– switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name.
I guess what I had meant in the end of my original post was that I cannot write any files to the server and gives either “file transfer failed” or “permission denied” in Filezilla.
I’m afraid that’s a server issue and you will have to ask your hosts for assistance with it.
I was able to change the name of the theme folder to with “-old” attached, but nothing has changed everything is still white (blank) with the site.
ok, I’m trying to eliminate where the problem is occurring, so this does help me. Thank you!
I tried with the themes renamed and the plugin folder having “.hold” after and still nothing.
Nothing from amazon, but a bitnami support member mentioned to use SSH to change file permissions. I’m not sure that would be what I need because I can change file permissions using Filezilla and it still does not work.
I had to increase the size of the bitnami wordpress ec2 EBS volume instance on amazon which fixed the problem rewrite to the wp-config file, BUT I’m still having trouble changing back my plugins folder from “plugins.hold” still saying permission denied via my ftp (Filezilla).
