Can you please update to latest version 1.4.8.8 then run some test and see if you still getting the same error?
Make sure to clear any browser / CDN / plugin cache after update and then check.

Okay, can you confirm me if you have reference transactions enabled againts you PayPal account?
PayPal helpdesk say me reference Transaction is deprecated and no more activation is possible

I am seeing the same issue on a couple orders in our shop as well.
Since I have found the issue, I have since updated the plugin to Version 1.4.8.9
This has not affected all orders, only two of them.
Payment was rejected due to an error: (81253) “81253-ReferenceID : Mandatory parameter missing” Order status changed from Pending payment to Failed.

@squeaky, so you are saying that only those 2 orders are seeing this error? That seems like either they have canceled the recurring Payment from their PayPal account that would leave you to this error.
Please check and see if you continue to see the same issue with other normal users as well.
