    Hi,

    We installed Wordfence for the first time and get the following error:

    Wordfence could not get an API key from the Wordfence scanning servers when it activated. You can try to fix this by going to the Wordfence “options” page and hitting “Save Changes”. This will cause Wordfence to retry fetching an API key for you. If you keep seeing this error it usually means your WordPress server can’t connect to our scanning servers. You can try asking your WordPress host to allow your WordPress server to connect to noc1.wordfence.com.

    We’ve contacted our host who says they are up-to-date. I read some other similar posts and tried deactivating/reactivating as well as deleting Wordfence tables/data on deactivation.

    Also ran the connectivity test and got the following:

    STARTING CURL http CONNECTION TEST….
    Curl connectivity test passed.

    STARTING CURL https CONNECTION TEST….
    Curl connectivity test passed.

    Starting wp_remote_post() test
    wp_remote_post() test to noc1.wordfence.com passed!

    Starting wp_remote_post() test
    wp_remote_post() test to noc1.wordfence.com failed! Response was: error:0D0890A1:asn1 encoding routines:ASN1_verify:unknown message digest algorithm

    Any thoughts on how to resolve would be much appreciated.

  • Hi,

    Looking at that last post error…Is your host using the latest version of OpenSSL? That would be something to ask them as this error points to a certificate encryption issue. Try disabling SSL and see what happens. Go to Wordfence Options page, and uncheck “Enable SSL Verification” near the bottom of the page. Now try running another test.

    Thanks!

    Thanks. Somehow, I now have an API key, but still get the same error when I run the connectivity test, even after disabling SSL Verification and saving the changes. I tried to manually run a scan and get that same error indicating “unknown message digest algorithm.”

    Does this rule out the possibility that our host has an outdated version of OpenSSL?

    Right. It doesn’t matter that you get the error because your server needs to update it’s openssl libraries. You should do that but in the meantime the plugin should be working for you.

    Great. We’re waiting for a response from our host on the openssl libraries. Thanks!
