• I am lost. I’ve been a user for three years with no significant problems I couldn’t fix myself. Now I’m getting the dreaded “error establishing a database connection” message and I cannot find anything in the support forums or here http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-fix-the-error-establishing-a-database-connection-in-wordpress/ to help me figure it out.
I frankly don’t even know what to try at this stage. Much of the stuff in the support pages seems to be written for people with more experience at html than me because I don’t understand if I’m following all of the advice there correctly. Can someone help me?
This is the specific message I’m getting when I try to log in as admin:

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at ste1028001521334.db.6831716.hostedresource.com. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?

If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums. My website is stevevolk.com

    —Best, Steve

  • If you haven’t changed anything you’ll need to talk to you rhosting company and ask them to check that the details match what they expect.

It’s a long-shot but if they’ve made an update that’s changed any of the database connection values you’ll get that message. The most likely cause of it is that their database server isn’t online, so your site can’t connect. Again this is something that your hosting company needs to sort out.
