Error establishing a database connection

after i uploaded the wordpress files to my server I get this message when i get the following message

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

I am sure i have the corret password and username so what should i do?

help me please
