Hi! So I went just now to go upgrade my WordPress from verison 2.7.1 to 2.8. The automatic upgrade from WordPress wouldn’t work, so I downloaded the zip file and uploaded all of the new 2.8 files, replacing all of the old ones except for “wp-config” and my plugins/themes folders. By blog at http://www.alltheshadesofgrey.net still works – I can still see it – but every time I try to log into the admin area, I get this message: “Error 500 – Internal server error

An internal server error has occured!
    Please try again later.”
The log-in page works, so I can go to log-in, but once I log-in, where I should see the dashboard, is when that pops up. Anybody have any clue what I can do to fix this?! Thanks to anyone who can.

  • The most common culprits are plugins.

Many older plugins simply aren’t compatible with WordPress 2.8. So try deactivating all of your plugins and check to see if this resolves the problem. If it does, activate the plugins one by one – checking the problem areas after each re-activation – until you find the problematic plugin(s).

If you can’t deactivate your plugins via the WordPress Administration area, deactivate all plugins by using FTP, or your host’s control panel, to rename your wp-content/plugins folder to wp-content/plugins-hold then create an empty wp-content/plugins folder. Once you’ve logged in to your WordPress administration menus, use the same method to delete the empty plugins folder and rename plugins-hold back to plugins. As above, activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

It worked! Thank you so so so much for all of the help! It is greatly appreciated! 😀

Same problem and your solution works!! Thanks a lot

    Thank you esmi!

Yesterday I upgraded to 2.8.1 and couldn’t access one of my posts to edit, getting that Error 500 message.

I just shut off most of the plugins, leaving ‘Gravatars2’ and ‘WordPress Database Backup’ still activated. I then tried editing the ‘problem’ page, and it works just fine!

    THANKS!

    You are the BEST!!!!!
    Thanks
