• I just upgraded to 2.3.3 and it went fine. I have one problem though. When I upload a file (in this case .pdf)as part of writing a post all goes well. The file shows up in the list of uploads. But when I embed the URL for the file in a hyper link on any post the link does not work. I click on the link and get an Error 404 – not found message. The file is there and the URL was taken right off of the description of the upload. What am I doing wrong? Thanks. Chief

  • It is difficult to say unless one can see it.

In the rare occasions when I have to upload a .pdf file, it works as with any other file: when the “thumb” is clicked and have the options there I just click on the “Send to editor”, and it works.

Don’t understand your post. I went to the manage-uploads page and clicked on the ‘thumb’ but no ‘Send to editor’ option showed up. The only time that I see that option is when I am creating or editing a page and uploading a file. Then I see it below the three radio buttons relating to the links. Two questions. First, when you upload how do you do it? And second, which “thumb” are you referring to? Thanks, Chief

This is clearly a problem within Word Press. When I copy the URL for the file and paste it into a new window the URL opens the uploaded file. But when I take the same URL and embed it into a hyperlink I get the error 404 – not found message. Does anybody have an idea why WordPress does this and how to work around it? Thanks, Chief

Well, if you want to use an uploaded file in a post/Page then you don’t go to the Manage – Uploads. There is nothing to do there when you compose a post.

Go Write – Post and below the text input area use the Upload (when uploading new files) or the Browse All (for files already uploaded).

For image files you see a thumbnail version and for non-image files (like .pdf) you see a blue square. I was referring to that blue square as the “thumb” of PDF. Click on it, select “link to file” and Send to editor.

Thanks for your help on this. Here are the details of what I am talking about. if you go to http://www.dr-smith.com/board-bench/ you will see a link to a file. If you click on it you get an error 404 – not found message. But if you take the URL embedded in the link – http://www.dr-smith.com/wp-content/uploads/board-bench-overview-pdf.pdf – the file comes up. So the URL is correct – the problem is that within WordPress there is something that is blocking the display of the file. Thanks, Chief

And here is a really bizarre wrinkle – when I open the file in a new window it works – but if I try to open the file in the same window I get the error message – go figure. Chief
