Embed a Text File in a Post

I’d like to embed a plain text file (from Notepad) into a WordPress post. I did find a plugin which works well, but relys on Google Docs. I read about embedding on WordPress but using [embed etc only adds the hyperlink, not the file contents.

Is there a way to embed text inside a post (keeping it in the original file).

I want to use this for ASCII art so the formatting needs to work and the only reliable way I’ve found is to keep it in the text file. I have tried adding the art directly into WordPress with [code and [pre but they glitch and leave me with a lot of clean up when I notice the art has lost the formatting at some point.

Thanks for any help and suggestions. I’ve been working on this awhile with all it’s ups and downs.
