Email Notification

I was wondering if it is possible to have a registered user sign up to receive notifications for a specific event. I would like to have a post with photos from an event and in the post have a section where users can sign up to receive an email notification of when this event occurs again. Does this make sense? For example, if the organizers have 2 events, one in the spring and one in the fall and the spring event has happened and I publish photos from it, the user can sign up to receive a notification of when the next event is happening, or if the organizers add another event, the user will receive the added event.
